Mandy, a high school Spanish teacher from Denver is on Christmas break at a beach town in Mexico when she meets Hap, a New Zealand traveller who is on a 9 year mission to live and work in every single continent before he is 30.
They fall in love. Hap comes to visit Mandy for 2 days and stays for 3 months. They go on holiday to Colombia but on their return he is deported for having worked on a tourist visa.
Mandy puts her life into storage and travels the world with Hap for the next 4 years in the quest of his goal. Hap is beset with clinical depression and breaks up with Mandy half way through Namibia.
A year later they get back in touch, decide to get married and live in the USA. Hap is refused a green card. They find that when he was deported the immigration officer had placed an illegal drug conviction on his record and that Hap is permanently banned from entering into the USA.
This is their journey of long distance relationship, travelling the world together, breaking up in Africa, getting married one year later and taking on the fight against the US immigration service to overturn his record.
